I do this quite often, I don't always win but im always atop my team.
1. DO NOT follow teammates.
2. Random grenades are your friends (Brett Farve them into known spawns.)
3. Take the most odd route around the enemy. Not the opposite way of your teammates, but like up ledges and in and out of buildings, just don't backtrack on yourself.
4. Look left, then right then left again, and dont forget about the dark corner in the building.
5. Don't be afraid to camp if you get into a rut.
lastly the most important.
6. Don't Suck!

I play solo under a newly created gamertag (my other has friends who play and Im lvl 15 anyway, got all gold guns, got bored, started again ! ).
Its geordiemp on 360 and I play SOLO TDM, my average LIFETIME KD is 2.5 playing public solo TDM. How do I do it ?
Easy, every map has a best class / gun and equipment load out. some set ups are best for start of game, some for mid game.
Starter classes - light SMG SA / flack AR / scavenger SMG (for camp heavy maps). Ghost is a terrible starting class, it provides no benefits if you have a strela secondary (or law).
End class - Ghost,as eventually you will either die or can only shoot down so many spy planes. Run counter UAV as a killstreak, always, so you can last as long as possible on your starter class. Try to reflect same guns as above. If you run over say an mp5k ext mags where you died, you pick up that ammo. (Secret tip).
So, if you have say a ak74U rapid fire svavenger class, and say 120 bullets left and die, switch to a ghost 74U RF and run over where you died, you magically scavenge the bullets immediately without having to pick up the gun. They ADD to your gun magically.. This is a tip few people realise, and why going for revenge kill is a good idea (and satisfying).
Just because you have ghost does not mean you need 100 % steath and a silencer, my best ghost class is a mobile 74U grip, invisible, move, kill, move then invisible again.
Tip no 2 - having 2 primaries. Start with a RF smg with ghost pro. Have a quick change pistol secondary. Pick up an assault rifle in place of pistol as you dont need to take out air support.
Then you have best gun for each part of map if you know the maps. Note, only if you have ghost pro, otherwise you need a strela playing with randoms.
Tip no 3 - use hacker pro, there are 6 guys opposing you with claymores, motion sensors and the like if they are any good. Some maps not needed, eg launch or jungle for example...
It is a free camper blackbird, it tells you where the campers are located and where to throw you tacs and nades. Scav pro (for lots of tac flashes) and hacker pro is the best anti camper class. You can go around, find the hide out with a big red claymore telling you where they are, throw in a flash, then run in for easy kills. LOVE campers,
Tip no 4 - when you shoot or kill someone, move to a flanking position of where you shot from as quickly as possible - shot then move. All decent players throw frags or run to red dots on map.
Have a way to deal with it - either silencer, flack for AR as your movement will be slow with that strela on your back, or smg class (can move fast), throw stun or flash after the kill in likely direction of enemy is best time to use them a few seconds after a kill.
Tip 5- all gun fights you will take some damage, even say just 1 bullet, your health is down from 100 to say 60 for 5 seconds, recoever BEFORE the next engagement. Otherwise its you at 60 vs another guy at 100.Usually if you move towards your players, for 5 seconds, chances are you will recover and enemy is other way.
Tip 6 - strafe when fighting, most guns kick right (your left when facing them). Guess what ? Move when firing.
Tip 7- use a jammer for equipment for everything except your flack class. Drop it when RC cars are around, they stop and you shoot them for easy points. You shoould NEVER die to an RC car if you plan for it. Shoot RC cars from the hip, they move too fast to RDS.
Tip 8 - Stuns and flashes, use them, get good with them. Stuns for flanking, flashes for head on engagement. For campers, if they are at the window - stuns, for capers already aiming at the entrance, stuns are not as good as flashes. Its map dependent and linked to gun selection. Half my classes are stuns, half flashes...Generally flashes are better with an AR or a camp heavy map lots buildings, stuns for open maps and flanking play.
Tip 9 - shoot people aiming for lower waist or legs. Viewkick = headshot, drop shotter going prone with get a bullet in the head. NEVER aim high, all recoil from guns is UP.
Finally, piick guns with good irons and learn to use them as well as a red dot (Galil, ak47 and ak74u, G11, commando). It frees up an attachment for dual mags, ext mags, or a grenade launcher. All give YOU an advantage. Practice witha grenade launcher on cmbat training, get accurate with it (using SOH as you need quick reload). Fire from corners on long sight lines so you can jump back around corner to reload. My KD with launcher is 3.0. Its not a noob tube in BLOPS, it needs to be very accurate for a 1 shot kill. Practice and practice....
One last point, even without a spy plane, look at locations of your team mates, when they disappear it tells you how they were killed, shotgun . smg / AR / sniper. From this you know say a shotgun guy is located close to where the arrow has disappeared. If you run towards him, strafe backwards when shooting it will limit his range.
Follow the above and the only games where you wil suffer is if your team mates are so bad there is blackbirds and dogs, otherwise they should have no effect on your performance.

Some more tips from me. I've modified my play and went from a semi-camper who usually was around 12-8 to usually high twenties in kills and below 10 in deaths. My K/D is misleading a bit because I keep prestiging and so things suck a bit as I keep the M-16 until I rank up again to go back to my favorite... Silenced Galil
As mentioned but just to add a bit, I use the maps quite a bit. If you watch where your teammates are facing, then watch for who "glows". When your teammate GLOWS then he's shooting. If he disappears, there's an easy kill nearby because he's already damaged them. If you notice on smaller maps your team is wedging in one direction, haul butt the other way. The other team is about to start spawning from the other side. Some times I also lay a claymore at my own spawn point. This way if I'm methodically moving across, taking out 3-4 of the other team, and start seeing less and less of the enemy, a clamore will "tell" that they've started spawning back on the other side (likely behind me).
Use your cover, use your cover, use your cover. I see so many iD10Ts on the final kill cam running down the middle of the street, map, etc. Not only to fire but duck back around during reload. I also lie down for every reload. There are COUNTLESS times the enemy runs right past me as I'm lying down, reloading. This is esp true w/ Ghost Pro since you don't turn red on their screen.
Clamores are great "tells." At the beginning of a match, I run to a choke point, lay a claymore, and keep running. Then, if it goes off a few minutes later and I'm still in the area, turn around and run back (but not around a corner) for easy kill since the Claymore damaged/killed them. Most teams run in packs so if there's ONE, I always assume a SECOND is right behind.
With Hacker, use this to scan the map. If you're on a larger map and not sure where to go next, turn towards a wall. The glowing equipment will jump out in contrast to the dark wall, and then head that way. Small, upstairs rooms are easy kills. I run a nova gas/grenade load out, so I'll throw gas on one end (through a window) and then throw the grenade on the other end. Between the two, one gets them. They either choke out, or get blown.
As you run, always "peek" to the sides. So let's say I'm running from North to South. To my west is a alley. I'll rotate the view thumbstick slightly left, while rotating the movement (right) right. The effect is you look left (West) while still running straight north. Countless times I'll catch a glimpse of someone going the same way on the other side of the building, running parallel, (slow down, wait), or going the other way, and so I'll back up, go back down the West alley and take them out from behind.
Headphones are awesome. It bumped my kills instantly. I was (I thought) alone on Jungle, when I heard a knife. I looked at the minimap and saw no green, so I knew it was an enemy. I turned, and gunned him, as he was intent on knifing me as well. With my home stereo, the knife sound wouldn't have registered against the background noises. (Rainbow 6 Las Vegas is awesome in surround because I know exactly which direction they're coming from).
On small maps, run more, camp less. Bigger maps you can camp more if you like.
And the final tip I'll share today is: Use the Theater. Play a game where someone just rapes your team, or one of your teammates rapes the other team. Pull up the theater, load up your last game, and just spend some time watching what they did, what they didn't do, etc. I have a friend who can easily hit 330 pts per min, run a k/d in the 3-4.0, and just slaughters the other team every time, regardless of his own team's strengths. Finally one day, I just started going through his "Recently Played Games," picking out maps or games that interested me. If he played 3 minutes and was 9-5, I passed. But a 9:30 game with 30 kills and a k/d at 3.5, I loaded and watched.

Good advice.
Very true, like all COD players I play TDM quite a bit, although I do enjoy almost all game types.
I must say, paying attention the what your teamates are doing is one of if not the most useful tool you can use, if you know where someone dies can safe your life, and if you wont be able to get to the other side of the map before your team then don't, stick to the center and wait for your team to finish then move to the opposite side of the map, this is how you get to the spawns before your team. But never forget, you'll be alone, it may be your best decision to wait at a choke point for the other team.
And also never forget, its ok to play tactically choose your positions wisely, but don't sit in a random corner in the side of the ma no one goes to, waiting for those random kills every so often. Thats camping. Not choosing your position wisely and benefiting your team and yourself.
Sitting in a corner is more likely to get you killed rather than keep you alive.
