Overkill is overrated. I used a token on it for 2nd prestige and havent used it since I bought it.
To answer your question, I always ran a Model 1887 as secondary to anything unless it was an SMG, which then I would run another SMG.

Im not a fan of Overkill as well.
I only use it for the easy challenge experience.
Its not bad, but its not a run and gun class. If anything it is a support perk for covering teammates during objective games.

I prefer to use it on a class with a Sniper or, in this case, the MK14. For the second primary I always use a SMG so I can run around as well.
I have it on one of my sniper classes, as well as my riot shield class.
I think it's a waste of a perk for the 2nd tier category. When you have Assassin, Hardline, Quickdraw, Scavenger I don't see why'd you pick overkill. When I use a riot shield I just switch my my pistol and exchange it for something on the ground. You can pick up guns but you can't pick up assassin, hardline (excluding specialist)
I use it to run something longer distance with a shotgun.
I've used it normally with an ACR with the AA12 as a secondary...
That being said... the best guns to augment with are the MP5 and the G36...
They have ridiculously fast draw times... so if you role out with sleight of hand, then you can quickly pull out another weapon capable of getting you out of a jam.
To get it pro quickly. Pick a weapon you're strong with and put it as the second primary and just switch to it and use as normal.
Combine it with specialist and you'll not have a wasted middle perk slot after 2 kills.
Combine an smg with a sniper for mix range action. Snipers don't require a lot of attachments so rock it as your second primary. Make quickdraw your first specialist perk and you'll be using your sniper to engage distanced foes instead of being forced to flank all the time.
Those are my tips.
