I've always had a Strict NAT, but when I reset my router it switches to Open, for about an hour, then for some reason it always goes back to Strict. I'm not sure what to do about it :/

If i'm wireless or running through the router my NAT type is strict and Type 3, but direct from the modem wired its Open and Type 2.

I know I am a bit late with this but with all of the Black Ops lag talk and such I wanted to post about NAT type since I am a Systems Engineer and have a very good understanding of it but I did not want to start a new thread being this one was already here.

The quote above is the best thing to do. If you give you console a static IP on your network and go into your router settings and enter that IP into the DMZ settings, you should always end up with NAT Type: OPEN.

A DMZ places your console on the public side of your router thus leaving it open to everything on the internet and opening all ports to it. Now there is a risk factor with DMZ as it leaves the system open on the internet but in reality, no one is gonna want to try and hack an xbox or ps3 especially one on a residential network so I would say the risk factor is about a 2 out of 10.

Many routers have a DMZ setting but for those that don't you can always install a 3rd party firmware on the router. DD-WRT is a great firmware to run to give you this function. I do want to warn that this is an advanced method and can ruin your router if not done right.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to let people know this many help them given they have decent internet connections and also hardwired is always best if possible.

ive read that people that connect a router to their modem then split their connection to their PC/ps3/xbox/etc. from there have strict NAT types. but if you can find a way to connect your ps3/xobx directly to the modem that will solve your problem. i have my PS3 connected directly to my modem and i always have an Open NAT type

this helped A LOT. every time i get on XBL my nat type is always moderate or strict. and i have uPnP enabled. i just seen this thread and remember i could forward ports keep em open for my xbox. thankfuly it worked so far it went from strict to open. i really hope it stays that way and keep in mind anyone can do this you do not have to be pro with a computer and a couple people here could answer questions you may have about port forwarding!

you have to give your xbox an ip address... if you assign one you will not have a problem. just google it.
