CoD PRO Interview with RJ34
Teardrop
What's up guys. I feel like making this a series so here is the first one. I'm here with a CoD pro. Why don't you introduce yourself
RJ34
What's going on guys? My name is RJ, also known as RJ34, and I play Call of Duty professionally for Major League Gaming.
Teardrop
So you are a actual pro right? You have gotten paid to play CoD?
RJ34
Yes, we get a nice stipend to go to events and there's a lot of prize money to be won. My best placing has been 3rd at Call of Duty XP where my team of four players won $120,000.
Teardrop
Nice. So how long have you been playing CoD. The better question is how long have played CoD competitively?
RJ34
I got Cod 4 in 2007 after pestering my dad for months to get me a ps3. He finally gave in and bought me it. I played with some kids I met online and we found out about gamebattles. We started out doing Snd only as that was the gamemode everyone played on ps3. So I guess 2008 I started in a competitive atmosphere. I started doing variant once mw2 came out.
Teardrop
So you have been around awhile you could say
RJ34
Yea, wish I started a little earlier though.
Teardrop
Don't we all. So what do you say is your favorite CoD moment.
RJ34
I would say mw2 nationals. That was my first event and it was AMAZING. They had a lot of things to do for the spectators and the pro lounge was hooked up. We had dr. pepper smoothies a pool table and a lot of things to do to pass the time. I went in as an unknown player and kind of made a name for myself because I played really well.
Teardrop
Dr. Pepper smoothies? That sounds wicked good. What would be one tip that you can give players just starting out.
RJ34
Be patient. The process of becoming a pro takes a while. Build a team from the ground up and make your name known throughout gamebattles and by going to events. There is plenty of talent out there you just need to look for it
Teardrop
Now I know there has been alot of controversy in MW3 rule set about what is going to happen inside MLG. What do you think would be best for them to use to get people more and more people to watch
RJ34
To be honest, I think that any change will be a good one for competitive cod. Competitive cod strips the game down too much and ends up being boring for the majority of spectators. One of the first rules that was proposed was the introduction of killstreaks because of Call of Duty XP. I supported it because it was the first step towards trying to improve the spectator experience because Call of Duty viewership just did not cut it for the 2011 season. Another rule set that might work is promod, or prosim. This is an snd only style of play with many rounds with 1 forced sniper and at least one smg. I think that this will provide some exciting gameplay with more chances for clutches and awesome sniper shots and will ultimately make for a better spectator experience.
Teardrop
So obviously you don't just play video games for 19 hours a day. Is CoD your only Job?
RJ34
At the moment yes. Mostly because I don't really have other responsibilites. At this point and time Call of Duty hasn't changed so the need to practice isn't as important for me so I focus on working out and hanging out with friends. I'm also in the hiring process for the New York City Police Department. I should be hearing within the next week if I am hired and I'll be in the police academy for the next 6 months.
Teardrop
Very nice. So last question. Alot of people that play CoD don't know very much about how to play competitive. How would you reach out into the community to make that number grow
RJ34
Well to be honest that is on Activision to do. Activision could help by posting on their news feed about mlg or something along those lines. There's only so much we can do as players. Youtube is one avenue we can use but most people are only interested in seeing pub games.
Teardrop
Very true. Any shoutouts?
RJ34
Yea my youtube.com/r0b6 my livestream twitch.tv/rj34 and my twitter.com/rj34_
Teardrop
Alright well thanks for doing this interview
RJ34
No problem buddy.
So hopefully I can make this a series. What do you guys think?
