I am a recent customer of Hauppauge as I bought the
HD PVR 1212. I bought the device so I could play my games on my TV in HD as well as record in HD and this device does exactly that.
From
Hauppauge's site:

HD PVR is the world’s first High-Definition video recorder for making real-time H.264 compressed recordings at resolutions up to 1080i. HD-PVR records component video (YCrCb) from cable TV and satellite set top boxes, with a built-in IR blaster to automatically change TV channels for scheduled recordings. Audio is recorded using AAC or Dolby Digital .
One of the popular uses for the HD PVR is for recording video gameplay.

First off if you use HDMI or will only use HDMI, this device isn't for you. The device utilizes component cables (Red Blue Green) for the mechanism to record video.
But down to the nitty gritty and what you want to hear!
I got my HD PVR but wasn't able to start right away because me being a savvy guy thought to myself "I can just install t his without reading the directions". DON'T DO THIS!
Go by the book, it will save you the hassle and frustrations I went through. I cleared the installation of the software and drivers and went by the book and it worked like a charm.
The HD PVR comes with a pretty sweet software package to record gameplay and convert the video to other formats. The HD PVR will allow you to record up to 1080i but unless your PC is top of the line with dual core processor and a monster video card, you'll probably want to live with 720p.
The HD PVR records whatever your TV is putting out. It's important to set your X Box or PS3 down to 1080i or lower to begin the capture process. This device will record other items besides gaming consoles and you can use it to convert VHS to DVD and even has the ACHVD format (Blu-Ray) to put on DVD's.
The device is pretty sweet and works well once you go through a few test runs with it to make sure you got it down. You can see the quality of recording below.
Overall I rate this product a 4 out of 5 stars.
