As you may or may not have known, the
2009 VGA show was tonight on Spike TV. The show started off with a Batman Arkham Asylum opening. This is by far one of the biggest shows for gamers hands down. They wasted no time in getting into the awards presenting the Best Voice in a Video Game.
2009 VGA Best Voice in a Video Game
Zachary Quinto, or you may know him better as Sylar from the hit tv show Heroes, presents the Best Voice in a Video Game. The nominees were: Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn, Claudi Black as Chloe Frazier, Jack Black as Eddie Riggs, Nolan North as Nathan Drake, and Mark Hamill as the Joker.
Jack Black takes home the Best Voice in a Video Game. Jack's speech was pretty funny, he went up as if he won the Game of the Year and they had the producer "tell him he wasn't game of the year" and that he wasn't even nominated and proceeded to break the podium. It was obviously planned out but nonetheless funny.
2009 VGA Best Action Adventure Game
Tony Hawk was our next award presenter for the Best Action Adventure Game. The nominees were: Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Brutal Legend, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Assassin's Creed 2 took home the award for Best Action Adventure Game.
The speech from the Ubisoft guys was much more mild and your standard acceptance speech. They were Frenchies but you wouldn't have known until they spoke French.
None other than the UFC's newest big name Kimbo Slice was the next to come on stage to show the premier for the new UFC 2010 Undisputed game.
2009 VGA Studio of the Year Award
Zach Braff from Scrubs followed soon right after the world premier for UFC 2010 Undisputed for the Studio of the Year Award. The nominees were: Naughty Dog (Uncharted 2), Infinity Ward (COD Modern Warfare 2), Rocksteady Studios (Batman: Arkham Asylum) and Valve (Left for Dead 2). Rocksteady Studios with the new Batman Arkham Asylum game took home the Studio of the Year Award.
The most appropriate person to show the premier of the new Star Wars Game was no other than Samuel L. Jackson. The game looked pretty intense and I will probably have to pick it up soon.
Jake Gyllenhaal, the star of the Prince of Persia movie, showed us a first look at the movie based on the popular video game. The movie looks intense, HOWEVER, Jake has long hair in the film and I'm not sure if I could take him seriously with long hair.
2009 VGA Best Sports Game
Spike's new football comedy Blue Mountain State (seemed like entire cast) presented the Best Team Sports Game Award. The one guy blurts out "Tim Tebow's a Pussy" on stage... as an avid Gators fan, I say up yours! Nominees were: Madden 2010, NBA 2K10, NHL 2010, and Fifa Soccer 2010. (No NCAA game?) The winner was NHL 10? Get the f*ck out of here. Anyways 3 of the 4 nominees were EA Sports anyways. This is 2 years in a row that NHL has won.
2009 VGA Best Performance by a Human Male
There was no presenter of this award. Hugh Jackman from Wolverine won it as he did the voice in the video game as well. I just want to say this is the silliest category I think I have ever heard of.
2009 VGA Best Cast
Well he was holding 2 awards and I figured it's because there was another award and it was for the cast of X Men Origins: Wolverine Game.
2009 VGA Best Independent Game (Fueled by Dew)
Mountain Dew was the sponsor of this category and the nominees were: 'Splosion Man, Flower, Osmos, and Trials HD. Flower took home the award. All the games seemed rather "unique". The speech was great as they talked about "how do you make a game about Flowers?".
We have our first "intermission" as Snoop Dogg takes the stage and does a performance for us.
2009 VGA Best Individual Sports Game
Steven Smith started off by ranting about sports as he usually does but they cut him off (again planned) and go to the nominees: Fight Night Round 4, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, Wii Sports Resort, and UFC 2009 Undisputed. When it came back he went there with the Tiger Woods jokes. The winner was UFC 2009 Undisputed. Forrest Griffin accepted the award for the UFC and tried to get fans to leave and go order the PPV for the fights tonight. Forrest said what everyone else already thought... the first game sucked balls, the one that THQ developed was much better.
2009 VGA Best Role Playing Game (RPG)
Snoop Dogg takes back the stage but this time to present the Best Role Playing Game (RPG). Nominees were: Borderlands, Demon's Souls, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Dragon Age: Origins. I don't think it was any shock that the winner was Dragon Age: Origins as well as winning. Best PC Game.
They then did some quick winners for some other categories...
Best Performance by a Human Female - Megan Fox
Best Downloadable Game - Shadow Complex
Best Wii Game - New Super Mario Bros Wii
Best DLC - GTA IV: Ballad of Gay Tony
Most Anticipated Game - God of War III
2009 VGA Best Shooter (RPG)
Mike Tyson and the cast of Jersey Shore were next to present. OMG MIke Tyson is an idiot. They are presenting Best Shooter and nominees are Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Killzone 2, Left for Dead 2, Halo ODST. The winner... COD MW2! That's right Halo, you can suck it! Congrats to Infinity Ward for the win as well as picking up the best multiplayer.
They again did some quick winners for some other categories...
Best Fighting Game - Street Fighter 4
Best Handheld Game - GTA Chinatown Wars
Best Driving Game - Forza Motorsport 3
Best Soundtrack - DJ Hero
Best X Box 360 Game - Left for Dead 2
Best Original Score - Halo ODST
Best Game Based on TV - South Spark
2009 VGA Best Music Game
Stevie WOnder took the stage next to present the Best Music Game. Nominees were: DJ Hero, Guitar Hero 5, Lego Rock Band, and The Beatles: Rock Band. The Beatles Rock Band take the win. All games were made by the same people so you just basically beat yourself for this.
The preview for Halo Reach looked really exciting and almost movie like.
2009 VGA Game of the Year
Jake Gyllenhaal comes back to present the Game of the Year. Nominees were: Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. And the winner is....
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
I have mixed emotions on this Game of the Year award. Seems like a rigged game with Uncharted 2 as the winner. I mean over the other nominees... seems far fetched that this game wins.
Nonetheless, that wraps up this years VGA show on Spike. Call of Duty didn't leave empty handed, they won Best Shooter and Multiplayer so don't get too down. Excuse me while I go play what should have been game of the year... COD MW2.
