The best thing about the game only being 13 years in the future, is that the M16 was introduced during the Vietnam war, when I was in Iraq in 2009, 40 years after 'nam, the M16A4 was still issued to some units, and the rifle that's been phasing it out, the M4 SOPMOD, is still a variation of the same manual of arms. So all the developers have to do is make an educated guess on what the next weapon to be adapted by the U.S. will be, and there's a good chance that it will still be in use in 2025. I don't think the rifle that we've been seeing in the trailer is the XM8 as has been speculated, I think it's the Beretta ARX-160 (Beretta ARX 160 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). It would make sense because it's currently being fielded by the Italian military, and Beretta currently has the U.S. sidearm contract with the M9, and they own Benneli shotguns, who has replaced the Mossberg 590 as the contract holder for the USMC. Beretta getting a rifle contract isn't far-fetched, and they have a space gun look to them. Add into account that currently 1 out of every 5 rifles on a battlefield is a Kalashnikov patterned rifle (AK 47, 74, RPK, Dragunov, etc. etc.) and the E3 demo mentioned that "mercenaries" were attacking the president during the sniper show off, it'd be easy to assume that mercenaries in 13 years will still have some AK pattern rifles.
